Developer Competency Matrix

The following matrix describes my developer-related competencies, using categories originally set out by Sijin Joseph. Some folks like this kind of thing, others not so much. Given how some non-technical folks regard those with “development” skills, I guess I’m playing with a double-edged sword here. I signify my own rating in each particular category by a gold background.

Note that the knowledge at each level is cumulative; being at level n implies a knowledge of everything from the levels lower than n.

    Your post of this is very timely for me. We are going through a process of creating a very similar matrix and I can appreciate much of the critical thinking captured here. One of the additional dimensions we are implementing, is that for each competency (row), we are color coding, in progression, a competency level. This is in addition to the description of how to recognize their competency.

    Our plan is to use the matrix for candidate evaluation, initial placement, feedback, mentoring and promotions.

    It’s missing everything about scalability and big data… which are, in my opinion, problems involving programmers, sysops and architects, 1/3 each.
    Anyway it is an interesting analysis, I will always remember this matrix 🙂

    In my daily work I also evaluate a developer from a very important team collaboration perspective:
    Social/Group Intelligence.
    That goes beyond the ability to communicate and it is the most important skill to be cultivated in school and at work…
