The Monopoly of Management

The Monopoly Of Management

Managers and other senior stakeholders and elites within organisations have a monopoly on the priority of their own well-being. (See: Your REAL Job).

Wouldn’t it be great if other folks’ well-being received equal attention? If the set of all the Folks That Matter™. included staff, customers, their families and loved ones, and even society as whole? Some may baulk at the implied cost of spreading the well-being net wider. I see this as a fallacy and one which only serves to entrench the ruling clique’s monopoly further.

We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery…. He must justify his right to exist.

~ R. Buckminster Fuller

One aspect of the Quintessential organisation is just this – it makes both moral and business sense to prioritise the well-being of all – to Attend To The Needs of all the Folks That Matter™. Is this the kind of organisation in which you might best like to participate?

  1. Hi Bob, I’d be inclined to say yes to your final question. I have a question for you. Is it possible to create and most importantly sustain an organisation like this when the purpose is profit? I failed every time i tried and this is what eventually made me take the decision to stop working for organisations. Beware, I’m far from saying, i failed hence it is impossible and i strongly believe that a man like you can have better results than i had. But, do you believe it is possible?

    • Hi Augusto, hope you’re well.

I’m not comfortable stating unequivocally whether it’s possibe or not. Certainly I’d suggest that profit as purpose for an organisation is as uninspiring and unengaging as breathing is the purpose for living creatures. Which is the main reason we at The Quintessentioal Group (and first time around at Familiar) rejected profit as purpose in favour of other purpose(s). See also: Deming’s First Theorem.

At Familiar our declared purpose was “to help people come together and discover what ‘fulfilment’ meant for them as individuals”.

At The Quintessential Group, our declared purpose is to contribute to the “well-being of the people, communities and societies whose lives we touch”. And to demonstrate to the world one way of doing that, effectively and sustainably.

      Cheers
      Bob

PS You might like to search this blog for “Purpose” to see the various posts I have written on the topic, over the years.

      • Thank you for your answer Bob.

I tried to operate with a similar modus operandi (my idea was “joyful company”) but i always eventually failed when the time came when the man in charge reminded me that profit was the “real driver”.

I wish you will be able to coach the organisations to really understand what is improtant, i was not able to.

        All the best,

        Gus
